What is Since 1997, area residents have
been turning to High Desert Community Foundation with a common concern--improving the
quality of life in the High Desert and Mountain communities of San Bernardino
County. High Desert Community Foundation
is a
501(c)3 non-profit organization. We
build and strengthen the communities by making philanthropic giving as effective
as possible. Individuals, families,
businesses and organizations create permanent charitable funds that help our
region meet the challenges of changing times.
High Desert Community Foundation invests and administers these funds.
We then use the distributions to award thousands of dollars in grants
each year to many of the humanitarian, educational and cultural organizations in
this remarkable region we call home. Through
philanthropy that is visionary, diverse and inclusive, High Desert Community Foundation
has become a catalyst for improvement within urban centers and
rural settings alike in the greater high desert/mountain region. What is a
"community foundation"? Community foundations are a tax-exempt public charity that enable people like you to establish charitable funds. Your fund will be commingled with our other funds and managed professionally. Its assets will grow over time. You, your family, and colleagues are encouraged to continue giving to the fund to help it grow even more. Grants will be awarded from your fund to support local nonprofit organizations, in accordance with your interests. Anyone may use a community foundation to give something back to their community. How do I make a
difference for good, a difference forever? Establish a fund with us.
You can create a fund in honor of someone you love or to celebrate a
special event. You can direct your
gift broadly or narrowly to issues you care about or to wherever the needs are
greatest. However you give, your
gift can change lives--today and in the future. As someone who knows the value
of giving, you want to be assured that your gifts will meet vital needs and
improve our community. You want to
know your gifts will achieve positive results and, of course, maximize your tax
deductions. But most of all, you
want an easy and flexible way to accomplish your objectives. High Desert Community Foundation offers donors many services and benefits. We routinely work with families, individuals, estate and financial planners, and attorneys to design gift plans that fit every economic situation ensuring that donors receive the most benefit from their charitable contributions and that their philanthropic dollars are used to the fullest extent. Who runs Like all community foundations, we are overseen by a volunteer board of leading citizens and run by professionals with expertise in knowing our community's needs. We go beyond simply making grants that advance charitable activities: we also identify current and emerging issues, stimulate resources to address those needs and help our region prepare for the future. We use professionals to invest and manage our assets. Our staff can help you create the fit that makes the difference you want. Can I set up my own fund or a fund in honor of a loved one? We offer you power and flexibility in charitable giving without the legal paperwork, time and expenses associated with running your own private foundation. We can help you set up a fund that will maximize both your tax advantages and your impact in the community--now and forever. We manage the fund and maintain tax records, file tax returns and provide an independent audit, ensure that grants are always awarded in the name of your fund, and issue regular financial reports detailing the status of your fund. Since the IRS considers us a public charity, contributions are eligible for the highest available tax deductions. In most cases, these tax benefits outweigh using your assets to establish your own private foundation. What do you accept
as a gift? We accept gifts of various sizes and types from private citizens, local corporations, other foundations, and government agencies. Nearly every type of gift--real estate, closely held stock, artwork and insurance--can be contributed to High Desert Community Foundation. Gifts are made from bequests and by living donors through various types of funds and deferred giving vehicles. The funds are invested in diverse portfolios and management is a major aspect of High Desert Community Foundation's work. We share the common goal of serving our donors, nonprofit organizations, and the community at large. In addition to this, one of our special functions is to evaluate and help coordinate the needs and services in our community, so that charitable gifts are used effectively to fulfill a community's most critical needs. What kind of funds
do you have? There are several basic types of funds we can offer to you. They are greatest needs fund, field of interest fund, donor advised fund, etc. High Desert Community Foundation currently has 30 established funds and has given over $351,735 in grants in the since 1997.
